Improving Vision and Personalized Eye Care Services

Eye Doctors of Washington – Serving the Chevy Chase, MD, and Northern Virginia Areas

Eye Doctors of Washington provides state-of-the-art eye care throughout the Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC metropolitan area. The clinic’s highly skilled team of eye care professionals and award-winning ophthalmologists are dedicated to improving vision and providing personalized care. The practice specializes in laser vision correction, including bladeless LASIK surgery. It also offers treatment for glaucoma and dry eyes, as well as cosmetic treatments.

LASIK

LASIK is an outpatient procedure that can reduce or eliminate your need for eyeglasses and contacts. It corrects refractive errors by reshaping the cornea. To reshape the cornea, your surgeon creates a flap in the tissue. This can be done using a blade called a microkeratome or a laser. We use a femtosecond laser for LASIK. You must stop wearing contact lenses for a time period advised by your ophthalmologist before the procedure.

During the procedure, you will be asked to look at a target light and may feel pressure or hear a clicking sound. Your eye surgeon will then use the laser to reshape your cornea.

PRK

PRK is a laser vision correction procedure that can safely treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. It works by altering the shape of the cornea, which bends light toward the retina.

Our doctors participated in the original clinical trials that led to the FDA approval of PRK, so they’re among the most experienced PRK surgeons in the country.

During this safe and effective procedure, we first numb your eyes with medicated eye drops. Then, an instrument removes the epithelium to access the corneal tissue beneath it. This is done quickly and skillfully to avoid damage to Bowman’s layer.

Cataract Surgery

In cataract surgery, a clear artificial lens replaces the natural lens that becomes cloudy with age. This allows light rays to focus on the retina to improve vision.

Our eye surgeons use the latest techniques to perform cataract surgery. You will be in and out of the procedure quickly with minimal discomfort. You will need someone to drive you home after the operation.

Dr. Holzman is a leader in refractive surgery, having helped thousands of patients achieve improved vision, including professional athletes. He has performed over 90,000 LASIK and PRK procedures and has trained many other surgeons.

Glaucoma Treatment

Many types of glaucoma cause eye pressure to build up and damage the optic nerve. Treatments lower eye pressure and slow the damage. But they can’t restore lost vision.

There are a variety of treatments for glaucoma, including medicines (usually eye drops), laser treatment and surgery. Your doctor will choose the best one for you based on your type of glaucoma, its severity and how quickly it’s progressing.

Most people with open-angle glaucoma don’t have early warning signs, so they need regular comprehensive dilated eye exams to detect the disease in its early stages. That way, they can start treatment before damage occurs.

Eyeglasses

Eyeglasses contain corrective lenses held within frames. They address all of the same vision complications as contact lenses and are available in a variety of shapes, strengths, and treatments.

The corrective lenses are adjusted to match the prescription determined by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. The strength of the lens is measured in diopters, and the lens shape is based on the patient’s visual needs.

Eyeglasses improve the quality of life for people with myopia, boosting education outcomes and making it less likely that they will drop out of school. They also reduce deadly traffic accidents caused by impaired vision.

Contact Lenses

Many people can benefit from contact lenses as an alternative to eyeglasses. New technology has made it possible to wear contact lenses comfortably and safely for extended periods of time. Toric lenses correct astigmatism and multifocal lenses help patients with presbyopia, an aging change that affects near vision.

Lenses worn incorrectly or not replaced in time can lead to complications, including corneal ulcers and vision loss. These conditions may result from not following the recommended replacement schedule or sleeping in contacts that are not designed for overnight wear.

Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses allow more oxygen to pass through the lens to the cornea. They are less prone to bacterial deposits and may provide crisper vision.

Cosmetic Eye Surgery

Cosmetic eye surgery is available to reduce or eliminate fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. This procedure is typically performed under general or local anesthesia, and you will be able to discuss your specific goals with your surgeon before the surgery. The incisions that your surgeon makes will be carefully concealed within the natural contours of the eye area, and you can expect to see improved results within just a few days. Any swelling or bruising will subside within a few weeks. Your care team will provide you with individualized instructions for your recovery.

Mentoring for International Students Applying to US Medical Schools

F-1 Doctors – Mentoring For International Students Applying to US Medical Schools

F-1 Doctors offers mentoring to medical students who are applying to US medical schools. Their goal is to make the process as seamless as possible for international students. They offer admissions advice and help students with their personal statements.

They also provide training for doctors who work in motorsport. These medical professionals include physiotherapists, nutritionists, and osteopaths. Physiotherapists focus on muscle-related conditions and injuries.

Founded by Azan Virji

The F1 Doctors team helps international healthcare applicants navigate the complexities of the application process and get accepted to medical school. Its mentors have successfully gone through the same process and can provide invaluable advice on how to improve one’s odds of getting accepted into a medical program.

Mentees reported having multiple challenges during the 2020-2021 application cycle, with limited extracurricular activities, finding mentors to help with the application cycle, and finding programs that accept international students being the most common (Fig 4A). They also shared that they were able to find the support they needed through F1Doctors mentorship.

Virji and his colleagues started the platform to help ease the stress of applying to medical school. They wanted to help other international students overcome obstacles like navigating the financial aid process and cultural differences that might hinder their success in the US. The platform has also helped mentees write strong personal statements, which are critical for admission to medical school.

Providing mentorship

F1 doctors are medical professionals who work alongside psychotherapists and athletic trainers to prevent, diagnose, and manage musculoskeletal problems. They also assist motorsport teams to ensure the safety of drivers and spectators. Choosing the right career path is important for F1 doctors. There are many options to choose from, including orthopaedics, neurology, and emergency medicine.

The mentorship program is part of the Whitetulip Health Foundation (WHF) and is open to international students who have completed a medical degree in their country of origin, but are currently residing outside the United States. The WHF’s goal is to help them find their way into the US medical system and contribute.

Prospective mentees can look through a directory of mentors and reach out to those who have similar interests and experiences. Some, like Columbia University student Ziad Saade, are interested in learning about their admissions prospects and what to expect from US medical schools. Other mentees want to get feedback on their admissions essays.

Providing admissions advice

F-1 Doctors is a student-led organization that provides admissions advice for international students who want to study medicine in the US. Its team of volunteer mentors includes over 60 medical school students from 30 countries and has helped more than 50 students. The website offers a variety of resources for students, including guides on the admissions process and financial aid.

Junior doctors in the UK undergo two years of postgraduate training after medical school, known as the Foundation Programme or FY1/F2 (Foundation Interim Year 1 and 2). The training is competency based, with clear learning objectives in each stage. There is also a rotational element with different healthcare settings, including general practice and hospitals.

After FY2, doctors can enter GP or specialty training, although this is not compulsory. Some choose to work in short-term non-training jobs and use this time to explore specialties and decide on their future career path. Other doctors choose to apply directly to a specialty programme, which is known as SAS or CT.

Providing financial aid advice

For international students, paying for medical school is a challenge. Unlike domestic students, they don’t have access to government loans and many schools have limited endowments that can’t fully cover tuition costs. This is why it’s important to have admissions advice from mentors who have walked the same path.

F-1 Doctors offers mentorship for students applying to medical school or residency programmes in the US. Potential mentees can browse through the directory of mentors and reach out to those who have similar backgrounds and interests. Many mentees are looking for words of encouragement, while others want more structured advice on how to improve their applications.

Virji and his fellow co-founders created F-1 doctors to help ease the path for pre-meds. The organisation aims to expand its service offerings to include financial aid advice. It already has a spreadsheet with information on different loan options and is in talks to partner with companies that can host webinars for students on financing their education.

First OB appointment: What to expect and tests to expect

8 Week Pregnant Doctors Appointment

If this is your first OB appointment, we’ll start by getting to know you. We’ll ask you about your family’s health history, your birth control methods and any medical or psychosocial issues.

We’ll take your weight, measure your height and check your blood pressure. You’ll also have a urine test and may undergo an internal exam to assess whether your cervix is opening (dilating). This is an important visit so come prepared with questions!

Your Medical History

Your doctor or midwife will want to know a lot of details about you and your family health history at this first appointment. They’ll also do a physical exam, a pelvic exam and measure your belly. Depending on how long it’s been since your last Pap test, they might check to see if the cervix is thinning or opening (a sign of labor).

The doctors will ask about your menstrual history and use that to determine your due date. They’ll also want to know if you have had any previous miscarriages, abortions or stillbirths and any other medical conditions. They’ll probably also ask about your ethnic background, as some prenatal conditions tend to run in certain populations.

During this visit, your doctor or midwife will also perform a hysterosalpingogram (an X-ray of the uterus and its tubes) to determine how your cervix is progressing. They’ll likely also take a vaginal swab to screen for group B strep.

Blood Tests

You’ll get a pregnancy blood test (to confirm your results from the at-home tests you probably took) and your doctor may measure your height and weight to record a baseline reading. They’ll also check your blood pressure and note if it’s higher than normal, which is sometimes a sign of preeclampsia.

Your doctor will take a sample of your blood for screening and diagnostic tests to determine whether the fetus has certain genetic disorders. These tests include sequential screening, quad screen, and first trimester serum screen. They must be performed at specific times during your pregnancy.

Other routine blood work includes a Pap smear and pelvic exam and testing for sexually transmitted diseases, including hepatitis B, syphilis, and HIV. The provider may also check your hemoglobin and hematocrit to determine if you are anemic, which can cause trouble for both mom and baby. These tests are required by the state of Virginia for pregnant women.

Ultrasound

Depending on your due date and your doctor, she may do an ultrasound or other physical exam. This is the best way to check the fetus’s progress and to confirm your gestational age. The ultrasound can also help your doctor to listen for the fetal heartbeat. You can hear the fetal heartbeat with a Doppler ultrasound or an abdominal acoustic scan (AAU).

You can also have a 3-D or 4-D ultrasound at this point. These take thousands of pictures and create a picture that’s like a photograph. You can even watch your baby move in real time!

Your healthcare provider may ask you to drink several glasses of water before the ultrasound so that your bladder is full. This is important because sound waves travel better through a full bladder than an empty one. The sonographer will apply a gel to your belly and use a hand-held device called a transducer to scan the area.

Group B Strep Screening

Group B streptococcus (GBS) is bacteria that normally lives in the intestines, vagina or rectum of healthy people. Approximately 25% of women carry GBS and don’t have symptoms. When a woman is pregnant, the GBS bacteria can pass to her baby during vaginal delivery and make the infant ill. This is rare, but can be serious.

A GBS test looks for the presence of these bacteria in a woman’s body, and if positive, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics to be taken before labor begins. The test is done by taking a swab from the vagina and rectum for analysis.

The procedure is simple and painless, but if you’re having a cesarean section, it may not be possible to do the test. Your provider will numb the area on your back, then insert the needle between two of the small vertebrae that make up your spine. The procedure takes about five minutes. The results are available in about one to three days.

The Significance of Effective Patient Communication for Doctors

The Importance of Patient Communication for Doctors

Becoming a doctor requires a major commitment of time and money. It involves four years of undergraduate school, four to eight years of medical school, and a residency training program.

Doctors, also known as physicians, are licensed health professionals who maintain and restore human health by diagnosing and treating illness and injury. They perform surgeries and prescribe medication.

Patient Care

Patient care involves the medical treatment and services that a person receives from health professionals and non-professionals working under their supervision. It includes the basic duties of healthcare workers like physicians, nurses and pharmacists as well as any ancillary staff that help patients with their medical conditions.

Doctors must make sure that they provide their patients with the information needed to understand their treatments and what to expect from them. This means explaining the chances of success and also the risk of failure, as well as addressing any fears or concerns that the patient may have.

The goal of patient care is to keep the patient happy and satisfied, which can be accomplished by regular consultations, addressing any questions or complaints that the patient might have and offering emotional support. Doctors can also encourage loyalty by rewarding patients who refer friends and family members, especially those with milestone or holiday celebration treats. This will show that the doctor and his staff always have the patient’s best interests in mind.

Medical Record-Keeping

A doctor’s ability to provide patients with clear, accurate records of their interactions with him is one of the most important aspects of his job. These records serve many purposes: promoting continuity of care, providing evidence in the event of complaints or claims and supporting clinical decision-making.

In addition to patient notes, these medical records may include diagnostic test results, medication lists, x-ray films and other imaging, EKG tracings, dental models/casts and other information related to the specific diagnosis or treatment of a patient’s condition. Some states have regulations regarding the length of time that medical records must be kept and how they can be accessed.

It is also important that doctors obtain explicit authorization from patients before releasing records to anyone other than their primary care physicians, unless there are certain circumstances under which the release is necessary for patient safety. A doctor should not refuse to transfer a record when requested by a patient or his authorized representative and should charge a reasonable fee for doing so. Additionally, a physician should properly store records that have not been transferred and inform the patient about how long they will remain available.

Collaboration and Referrals

Whether it is to discuss patient concerns or to make an in-person appointment, doctors need access to enhanced communication channels that facilitate collaboration and increase accessibility. Dedicated communication platforms can include secure messaging systems and telemedicine capabilities, enabling doctors to connect with patients remotely for medical advice, answers, and follow-up care.

Physicians must collaborate to provide high-quality, comprehensive healthcare and support their patients. They should be equipped with collaborative competencies, which are increasingly being recognised as a key competency in graduate and post-graduate medical education and training.

Upping your interdisciplinary teamwork game can help you to deliver better client outcomes and uphold your integrity as an independent healthcare professional. For example, if you notice a client’s blood pressure trend worsening over time, reach out to the physician who referred them for therapy and share your insights about how a compensatory strategy might be helpful. This can also strengthen your relationship with the referring doctor, showing them that you are a team player.

Continuing Education and Research

Continuing education is vital for health care professionals to keep up with the latest advancements and trends in their fields. It improves job performance and increases confidence, and it helps doctors stay abreast of new techniques, skills, protocols and technologies that can help them provide better patient care.

Many physicians attend medical conferences and seminars as part of their ongoing professional education, as they are a great way to learn about the latest breakthroughs in medicine and network with other colleagues. Physicians also participate in online learning, which allows them to access a wealth of information and study at their own convenience.

Ongoing education also benefits the healthcare industry as a whole by helping reduce medical errors such as prescribing medications incorrectly or using outdated procedures. This ultimately results in healthier patients and lowers overall healthcare costs. Continuing education can also teach physicians new procedures and technologies for treating diseases or illnesses, which helps their patients get well sooner and return to their normal lives.
